Additional Info: Our Daily Bread Community Kitchen serves breakfast and lunch Monday-Friday and provides a sack meal on the weekends. The program is run through Action Ministries and also provides haircuts, HIV testing, Lifeline assistance, personal care/hygiene supplies, pet food distribution and verification of homelessness.

Additional Info: AIDS Athens provides a food pantry for AIDS Athens patients. Anyone who has a postive HIV or AIDS test is eligible to be a client. Good nutrition can help slow the progress of the disease, manage symptoms, improve response to drug therapy and increase overall quality of life by improving daily functioning.

Additional Info: The Ark is located in the same building as the Athens Area Emergency Food Bank and writes referrals for neighbors to receive one week's worth of food. By doing this, The Ark helps our neighbors stretch their monthly food budget and allow for extra income to use toward bills.

Required Documentation: Written referral form from agency, picture ID/Drivers License, Social Security Card and Medicaid Card. No proof of legal status is required.

Athens Are Emergency Food Bank gives food to individuals and families in the Athens/Clarke County area who have been screened and referred by authorized Clarke County agencies. To qualify for a referral, an applicant must show proof of the number of people requesting food and Clarke County residency. Although they ask for a simple statement of the emergency, they do not pass judgment in any case. If the requirement for referral cannot be met, Athens Area Emergency Food Bank works with other agencies to find a resolution.  No one who is hungry is ever turned away.

 

How Can I Get A Referral For Help?: The majority of the referrals for the Athens Area Emergency Food Bank come from The Ark, a church supported agency. This organization can qualify you for help. Contact information for The Ark can be found above. The following is a list of additional referral sites:

 

Residents of Athens Housing Authority: Must get a referral from the Residential Services Office located in Rock Springs.

 

Those who are homeless or transient (just passing through), without a permanent address: Must get a referral from the Department of Family and Children's services at 285 North Avenue, Athens, GA 30601. You will need to make an appointment with Swanson Thurmon (706) 227-7043 to complete the application process. Please bring your Social Security Card and a Picture ID to your appointment.

 

Applicants with minor dependents, zero income, and no health insurance for the minor children: You must get yoru referral from the Department of Family and Children's Services at 285 North Avenue, Athens, GA 30601. In order to obtain the referral you must apply for Food Stamps and Medicaid with a DFCS worker. You will not be denied a referral to the Emergency Food Bank in the event that you do not qualify for either of the programs.  It is only a requirment that you apply.

 

How Much Food Can You Get? : Qualified individuals and families are eligible for a 7 day supply of food two times during a 6 month period. Food is provided for emergency situations. The Athens Area Emergency Food Bank does not have the resources to provide long term assistance.

Casa de Amistad

Additional Info: Casa de Amistad works with the Hispanic immigrant population in Athens, Georgia and surrounding counties. They provide social services, referrals, translation, education and advocacy. The food assistance program offers low income families in Athens-Clarke and surrounding counties with food from the food bank.

Hours: By appointment only


Additional Info: If you are in need of food for your family, you can reach the Emergency Food Pantry by calling the Cornerstone church office. You will be directed to the EFB (Emergency Food Pantry) voice mail. Please leave a number where you can be reached and a volunteer will get back to you with a day and time when you can receive grocery items. Food is available on an emergency basis and no more than once in six months per family.

Additional Info: The Sparrows Nest provides emergency food assistance to families with demonstrated need who are unable to receive food on the designated weekly distribution day and time. Currently this day and time is Thursdays from 12pm until 2pm. The organization provides both hot lunches and groceries.
